| Hand_OF_Mystra11-07-07, 06:12 PM | I am trying to figure out how opponents are aware of one another, say for a random encounter. I am thinking: 1. You start rolling spot checks at the maximum distance allowed in the DMG for the terrain. But what is the DC of the spot check? 2. If all the spot checks fail, move everyone and re-roll spot checks modified by the new distance. repeat these until one party is spotted. I can not find any rules for the DC of the spot check. There are rules to modify the spot check for distance, etc. I was thinking that it is a DC 10 spot check to notice a single person at 30 feet on a clear, sunny day. I would give -2 for the DC for each person in the party and -2 if the party is moving. Have I missed some guidelines for this and what do people think of this idea? thanks, Jim |

This assumes that the terrain is capable of blocking line of sight, if its a perfectly flat plane then spotting is automatic at initial encounter distance. I then allow another check at half distance and another check one round before they will have to encounter each other. The 3.0 DMG had better guidelines for this including modifiers for camoflage, size, number of members in the party, etc. That's basically what I'm basing this on. You might see if that's still available in the 3.0 SRD. |
