I am currently running an underdark campaign and the gnomes we ahve the ability to cast deaf. Only problem is we understand how blindness works in the grand scheme but deafness seems to be a little harder to ponpoint how it would effect npcs.

I am asking how deafness modifies the battle so we can better use the abilites of the race.

20% spell failure for all spells with verbal component.

Auto fail listen checks.

That's about it.

Best cast on casters during battle or (and especially if you have a rogue) anyone just before you roll initiative - gives a better chance then of the rogue catching them flatfooted twice.

Deafened
A deafened character cannot hear. She takes a -4 penalty on initiative checks, automatically fails Listen checks, and has a 20% chance of spell failure when casting spells with verbal components.
