I'm confused by the Deities and Demigods book about demigods and how they grant and cast spells. I have a character that become a rank 1 divine demigod (after playing this PC for 5 years in the same campaign). He was a 17 fighter/3 cleric.

The Deities & Demigods book says deities can spontaneously cast any spell they can grant, if they have levels in a divine spellcasting class. (page 29)

In the paragraph before that, it says deities "can grant spells from the cleric spell list".

So in regards to my PC, he can grant any spell from the cleric list and thus can CAST any spell from the cleric list. Meaning, he can cast 9th level cleric spells if he wants (do deities need components?)

If that's the case, then what is his caster level for these spells? Is it his cleric level, 3? Or, on page 27 it talks about Spell-Like Abilities being cast at 10 + divine rank. Would this be true for casting spells normally too?

This is a bit confusing, so thanks for any help here...

As I read it, here are the two relevant quotes to (hopefully) clarify...

The power works like a cleric's ability to spontaneously cast cure spells, except that it applies to any spell the diety can grant.

and...

Spontaneous Casting: A good cleric (or a neutral cleric of a good deity) can channel stored spell energy into healing spells that the cleric did not prepare ahead of time. The cleric can “lose” any prepared spell that is not a domain spell in order to cast any cure spell of the same spell level or lower (a cure spell is any spell with “cure” in its name).

Spontaneous casting simply allows you to swap out prepared spells for other spells of the same level or lower. It does not grant you more spell slots or higher level spell slots. It also does not allow you to cast spells of a level you otherwise could not.

So, your character can swap out any prepared first or second level spell for any spell on the cleric's list of the same level or lower. He cannot swap a prepared 2nd level spell for a 9th level spell.

Hope that clarifies it.
