Disease (Ex): Filth fever—bite, Fortitude DC 13, incubation period 1d3 days, damage 1d3 Dex and 1d3 Con. The save DC is Constitution-based.

The players have encountered a monster with this ability. How and when should they make their Fortitude saves? Do they have to make secondary saves? If you know a page reference, that would also be appreciated.

They make the saving throw once they come into contact with the disease, though they may not know whether they succeeded in the save or not. You may want to make the saving throw for them, or else they may suspect they failed if they can see they rolled low, though their character shouldn't necessarily be so concerned.

If the disease hits, then the character can keep trying to recover himself with more saves, or people can make Heal checks to try to help.

Diseases are explained on page 292 of the DMG, or you can get the info on the SRD here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#disease
