Dominate person [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-06-07, 09:12 PM What happens if the subject of a dominate person spell goes to another plane? The spell says that the range of control is unlimited, as long as you and the subject are on the same plane, but does that mean that the spell is suppressed and will reactivate if the subject returns to the right plane before the duration expires, or that the spell is effectively dispelled?

Lol, I think he was asking which of his thoughts was correct. I think that most magic that requires the same plane to be active just becomes inactive unless it specifically states that it is broken. So, if he returned during the duration of the spell, he would still be under the effects of the dominate.

The person is still dominated.
The dominator cannot exert control unless they are on the same plane.

Its like greasing the floor under a flying creature. The grease is there, the spell is not dispelled, but it has no effect on the flying creature.

05-07-07, 06:21 PM Assuming that the dominator gave orders to the dominated before he left for another plane. Would the dominated still be forced to obey those orders while he was on the other plane?

05-07-07, 06:30 PM Edit: Rereading the description of Dominate Person, the control is not bound by the plane, only the ability to exercise that control is. So, yes, instructions given prior to planar travel should still be in effect, but it would be impossible for the controller to change those instructions.
