Can anyone point me in the direction of where in the rules it talks about the effects of alcohol on a character? Such as bonuses, penalties, saving throws, etc...

I can't seem to find anything at all.

Thanks.

I don't think there are any, Arms and Equipment guide might have some for the more specific Ales in there. It is 3.0 but you should have no problems in using it for that. You could always do something like one drink per 2 points of con mod. Average human drinks 5 or 6 and is tipsy, now makes fort save DC 10+1 per drink past con mod to not become nauseous. Tipsy has no numerical bonus or penalty.

generally takes 1 hr to get a drink out of body, so if a person drinks one per hour they do not become tipsy. Once a person stops drinking they are nauseous for one hr per DC they failed the save vs. So long as you succeed on the save you do not become nauseous.

Or just tell everyone to take a level in drunken master from complete warrior.

To clarify IRL its an hour for the body to use up one unit of alcohol (a pint being 2-3 depending on what you drink). Of course your game world doesn't have to follow the exact same rules...

I'd recommend either having your players state how drunk they want to get and just assign themselves a penalty to dex and wisdom.

If you want a more consistent guideline, I'd say -1 to dex and wisdom for every drink equivalent (1 standard 12 oz beer, 5 oz glass or wine, or 1 oz shot) consumed, and the penalty is reduced by 1 every hour. That means Joe Commoner is going to be in a world of hurt if he drinks down 10 beers in an hour (0 wis/dex=unconcious/paralyzed) but he can probably manage to do so over a night of binge drinking and just end up PFD. It seems pretty consistent with reality from my experience.

There are some unofficial rules here (boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=827200)

Any use?

Perhaps only start taking penalties after the third 'drink'?
i.e. drink 2 mugs of ale, no effect. Drink a third, -1, drink a fourth, -2 etc.

Feel free to take your players decided past in drinking into account.

After all, if someone is a dwarf with the moniker Tordek "Iron Liver" Durkosh dwarf barbarian, should be able to down quite a few more than Eliana "The Feather" Threepwood the elf sorcerer.

Shameless Plug:

I've done it, here, as part of my in-development Avernum d20 project: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=839662 It's handled as a mild poison. No need to debate the peanut gallery.

Oops, I forgot to mention, no penalty for 1 drink in your system is what I typically use. Since the way I do it penalizes the stats directly, it honestly doesn't have a guaranteed effect until you have 3 drinks in your system at once (then you'd have -2 to dex and wis so you're mods would be down by 1).

guess i should clarify mine, one drink = one unit of alcohol. Generally the term is used for the equivilent of 1 shot, 12 oz beer, 4 oz wine ect. i think the one on wine is right but im going off memory.

5 oz. of wine, typically, less if it is deliciously fortified.

You could treat as a poison that does 1d3Wis and Dex / nausea with a Fort DC of 10+number of previous saves. Once they run out of Dex or Wis they pass out. Also, it explains why drunk people seem to have poor Sense Motive checks vs. my awesomely high charisma.
