I know this sounds strange but if the crazy bard wants to elbow himself in the gut to take non-leathal damage can he bypass his own defences but still defend himself from others?

I would assume he wouldnt have to count his Buckler, Unless the rules state his one arm HAS to block his other.( how silly would that look..lol)

What about his Dexterity bonus. If he doesnt move to avoid his own attack can he ignore that as well?

To go a step more can he make himself helpless for one attack? but not for the whole round?

I dont think there are any rules covering attacking yourself, If there are, great point 'em out, otherwise I'm looking for some ideas on how you would handle this.

I don't think there are rules concerning attacking yourself ... but I think that you would succeed automatically. But then, why? Why attack yourself?

But then, why? Why attack yourself?

I remember accounts of warforged doing such so they will not be killed in battle so easily.

Keep in mind, the OP did say the bard was crazy.*

Either that, or it's like in those scenes that keep showing up in movies, whether it's where Jim Carrey beats himself up in Liar Liar, or where Sherman Klump is fighting "Buddy Love" in The Nutty Professor. There are just times in an adventurer's life when he just wants to kick the tar out of himself.

*Prob'ly another CN who doesn't understand what it means...

If you want to attack yourself... sure you can automatically hit.

I would probably veto doing damage to yourself by "elbowing" your own gut, as that seems highly unlikely to deal HP damage. You could hit yourself on the head with a Sap though, or slit your wrists or whatever.

Well, it's doing subdual damage, I don't see any major problems. I'd say he's accepting the attack, therefor no attack roll would be needed.

Although it doesn't make sense in real world logic, there is no rule I know of that says you can ignore one attack and not have full defences available for a seperate attack. I might rule that it provokes an AOO though

If you have DR, I don't think you can avoid it though. I'm sure you could wave it off if you wanted, but I'd rule that it would still be in effect when it came to calculating damage

It seems like you've already got some good replies; so, I just gotta ask... Why? Please elaborate for us on the story of why this guy is hitting himself, for comic relief if nothing else.

Also, tell him you can't really hit your own gut with your elbow. Seriously, try it! You can sort of reach there, but not with any real force that is going to cause much pain. He's better off punching himself in the gut or the head!

[It's hard for me to type all this without laughing.]

The bard has a pair of inquisitor's bracers (MIC) Swift action to activate and you get to add a cure Moderate to your next attack.

The bard is almost at 8th level which means two attacks, since the second attack will have little chance of hitting most bad guys all he has to do is attack once at his highest bonus, then activate the bracers and attack himself (non-lethal) for the second attack.(thus curing himself)

That has to be the most twisted thing I've seen on these boards in a while.

I would disallow that. Seems an abuse of the RAW... But I don't have the text on Inquisitor's Bracers handy to prove it.

Abuse of RAW? It says right in the item that if you accidentally hit aliving cretaure with this item, the healing helps offset the damage you've done...

Go Zombie punching.

I, too, would disallow that. Kinda like the thread a while back where a guy wanted to take the retributive spell feat (from Complete Mage), load up a cure spell, and have his buddy smack him for it. Not really the "spirit" of the feat... in this case, item.

Add another vote for disallowing this action of self-abuse.

I say go for it. Just don't whine when the baddies do it better.

Make sure it takes him a Standard Action to smack himself with the bracers.

That way, he is just spending a Standard Action to heal himself -- think of it that way.
