Eldritch Blast rules [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-10-07, 02:38 PM The Warlock from Complete Arcane has eldritch blast, which is considered a first level spell. Would the Warlock be able to use metamagic on his eldritch blast? If so, how do you deal with things like counting toward a higher spell level and all that? Sorry if it's covered in CA; I don't have the book on me but I need the information soon.

It is a spell-like ability, not a spell. The first-level bit comes when determining effects based on spell level, such as save DC or dispelling difficulty.

As eldridtch blast is a spell-like ability, it can be altered by the metamagic feats that apply to spell-like abilities, which can be found in the Monster Manual.

The same would apply to any of the other Warlock's abilities.

edit: This is why the rules were changed to make eldritch blast a level 1 power when unmodified. It originally increased in level with the Warlock, which prevented its use with SLA feats. Now its level increases if you apply a blast shape or essence invocation to it, to limit the use of a BS or EI'd blast with an SLA feat.
