Explosive Runes [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-17-08, 05:46 PM Let's say someone is a cheapass and casts four sets of Explosive Runes onto a piece of paper. If someone reads this paper, do all the runes go off for a total of 24d6 damage, or does the first go off for 6d6, destroy the paper, and disable the other three?

Also, is it even legal to stack Explosive Runes like that? There's nothing in the rules that say it isn't, but it seems like a very annoying way to stack massive damage onto a trap at very low levels.

04-17-08, 06:39 PM From the wording of the spell only the Explosive Runes that are actually read go off. That should exclude the others unless they manage to read them all at once.

You cast a crapton of Explosive runes into a BOOK, then cast an area dispel magic (from a crappy scroll, preferably one that has NO chance of actually succeeding at the CL check, since you'll automatically succeed if you cast both the runes and the dispel yourself) at the book just BEFORE someone reads it. Any Runes that aren't dispelled by this will the explode at the same time, dealing their crapton of damage to the poor fool holding the book.

If you're REALLY nasty, do this in a 'library' rather than with individual books, and set up area dispel magic traps (again, that have no - or very little - chance of success).

A book is a single item, and so would only be affected by an area dispel once. You would instead want a stack of distinct, separate items (like a bag of envelopes, stack of pamphlets, etc.).
