I know there's the Delay Spell metamagic feat, but that's a cast and forget. I was thinking more have actually spending the entire round casting and having the spell go off just prior to the next action. I understand that this would entail maintaining concentration during that entire period. The specific application I'm thinking of is with a Dimension Leap/Hop/Door. My preference would be to cast the spell from a relatively safe space and then move right up next to the Enemy just prior to my next action, with a full action remaining before he gets to do anything. Otherwise, I move next to my opponent, it's the end of my action, he whomps on me, then I get to act. |

| thewh008-22-07, 10:31 AM | Isn't that called the delay initiative action? No, I don't think so. While delaying my initiative would allow me to have the spell go off in the next round, it wouldn't allow me to then have another full action immediately. |

For instance: Init 20: You Init 10: Enemy If you Dimension Door on your action, you will appear next to the enemy on Init 20, and he can beat on you on 10. If you delay to after 10, say, 9, you would appear next to him on 9, but your initiative is now set to 9. So, since you would not be able to act until your next turn, the enemy can beat on you at init 10. I don't know of a feat that lets you stretch out the casting time for a full round. |
| buzzsawl08-22-07, 12:21 PM | Quickened DimDoor is probably the most legal way to do what you want... And while you'd have to give up feats and a higher spell slot, you wouldn't have to wait an extra round... Although, it might be possible to apply a different metamagic feat with a spontaneous caster (thus increasing the casting time to one round). Depends on how you wanna define "no actions til your next turn." |
| mvincent08-22-07, 03:53 PM | Quickened DimDoor is probably the most legal way to do what you want...Dimension Door (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/dimensionDoor.htm) says: "After using this spell, you can’t take any other actions until your next turn." |
| MarkB08-22-07, 06:44 PM | So, effectively what you're trying to do is to defer your action in one round in order to be able to cast two spells in succession (or cast one spell and take another action) the following round? I don't think there's a way of doing it. |
| runestar08-22-07, 09:12 PM | He wants to cast it so that it takes place right before his next turn begins. Else, if he cast dim door on his turn, he teleports next to his target during his turn, and everyone else is free to do what they want with him. By leaving this to the last minute, he reduces the risk exposure he faces. At least that is my take on his intention. |
| Vharuck08-23-07, 12:32 AM | You can't do this because the turns are abstractions to represent continuously moving combat, and you're attempting to twist the system in order to prevent opponents from acting between two standard actions you perform. |

So he would cast it as a free action, and then do nothing until the next round. |
| buzzsawl08-27-07, 12:05 PM | Yeah...didn't read the spell desc before suggesting quicken. |
| SarkyBoy08-27-07, 08:46 PM | Although, it might be possible to apply a different metamagic feat with a spontaneous caster (thus increasing the casting time to one round). Depends on how you wanna define "no actions til your next turn." Applying a metamagic feat to a spontaneously cast standard action spell increases the time to a full-round action (not 1 round). Applying a metamagic feat to a spontaneously cast spell with a casting time longer than a standard action adds an extra full round action to the casting time (PH:88). It's not possible to get a 1 round casting time this way. I also don't know of any RAW way to change a spell's casting time to 1 round. - SarkyBoy D&D: The Collectible Rulebook Roleplaying Game |
