Ok. One player is playing a character that lost his left arm in a war. Now the only problem we have is what penalty should he take on grapple checks and climb checks. I thought a - 4 is enough cause I think that a human without his left arm is equal to a halfling when it comes to grappling.

What do you think?

There is no need to add any mechanical penalties.

Are you sure? I mean a guy with two arms obviously has an advantage over a guy who is missing an arm when it comes to grappling.

I think climb has modifiers for climbing with one arm, its intended for people trying to sword fight while climbing ect, but should be useable.

As for grapple, I have personally seen a one armed wrestler while attending my brothers high school matches. There is one on his JV team, and I have seen this kid pin plenty of people.

no penalty to grapple needed.

guy with 2 arms has advantage of 2 arms, guy with 1 arm has the advantage of who trains to wrestle a guy with 1 arm?

If he wants to create a character with two weapon fighting, suggest he use a stumpknife or variant of.
If he wants to use a shield, suggest he use some form of un-detachable shield that is built into his armor.
If he wants to two handed weapon, just let him treat his main hand as strong enough to do so.

Something like this that is a roleplay choice really shouldn't penalize a player.

I was going to use this example as well . . . the other kid would sometimes grab for an arm that should logically be there to find nothing but empty air. An arm with a hand attached is more then something to grab with, it's also something to be grabbed.

But it can also make such rp choices meaningless without the mechanics to back them up.

Look up the waterdeep splatbook. There is a feat where you give up the use of your right hand in exchange for some small bonuses. The penalties incurred may serve as a good yardstick.:)

The reason to make an rp choice is rp reasons. The reason to make a mechanical choice (skill focus concentration vs combat casting) is mechanical. I generally try to keep the two seperate.

I wanna play a character with no arms, no legs, an eye patch and cancer. Should I give him any penalties to doing stuff?

Most DM's probably wouldn't allow that Nathreet. The reason why there should be no penalty for missing an arm is because there were multiple examples why he can easily get around the penalties. I'd say that some special parts are tricky though, like keeping a mage still and quiet. Anything requiring two hands, I would say is mostly impossible without a lot of gold pumped into it. I would say no reach weapons, because they are two-handed because it takes a lot of balance to do it in your one hand.

That has actually been done. Go to the CO boards and search for a thread called the psionic sandwich or something. It supposedly uses true-mind switch to swap your body with a pebble or something. Still perfectly playable.:)

ok.. thnx for suggestions. The fighter probably won't suffer penalties when it comes to grapple checks but he won't be able to wield two handed weapons, just like normal person he will take -4 penalty for that -2 if he has monkey grip.

One more thing and it involves magical items.. bracer's. Would you allow them?
bracer of str? Of deflection? Is it possible?
I'm only asking cause wearing bracer's is much cooler than wearing a ring or an amulet :)
Zillah

03-29-08, 11:55 AM
maybe he can wear both sides of the bracers on the 1 arm? I don't see anything wrong about that. I am pretty sure bracers work when both are worn, so unless he uses them as anklets both would have to go on the 1 arm he has :P

I think the right call is just saying "you only have one arm, you can't use the other" and leaving the penalties at that. Note that normally a two-handed weapon can't be used one-handed, the -4 penalty for doing so is specific to the bastard sword, not a general rule.

Regarding bracers, I would want to limit the potential for abuse when another player wants to wear just one on a two-handed character by coming up with some way of "attuning" the unworn bracer to his missing arm, basically making it so that the bracer is still effectively "worn". Perhaps a 2nd level cleric spell or something would suffice.

Phantom Limb
Necromancy
Level: Clr 2
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range: Touch
Target: One magic item and one willing character with a missing limb
Duration: Instantaneous

When phantom limb is cast, the magic item is effectively donned by the character touched on the appropriate missing body part. The item is considered to be worn until another casting of phantom limb puts a different item on the same body part or until the item leaves the possession of the character "wearing it."

That will allow him to deal with the bracer problem with only minor hassle, reinforcing the fact that he is missing an arm without completely gimping him mechanically.

If you can describe to me how you are getting around/picking things up feel free. Eye patch gives no penalty, in my book, as you still have another one. If you feel like playing with 2 eye patches, well if you want to describe your characters spot checks as a super hearing, or magical radar ala daredevil feel free. For cancer, depending on how far along, if you are very early stages, sure there is no penalty and you probably wont notice. If you are further along, why would you not get remove disease cast? Also see regeneration for loss of limbs/eyes.

According to the hand of tyr feat, you can still fight with a 1-handed weapon and a light shield (but not heavy shield), and a -4 penalty on climb, disable device, open lock and tumble checks. And you can only wear one ring...(retarded, yes, I know...)

Of course, this assumes you lost only your hand, and not your entire arm.

So you are pretty close.:)

Just apply 1/4 of the penalty snakes take on grapple checks.
