| Zinger209911-19-07, 10:49 AM | Tell me everything there is to know about Gaseous Form. I want all doubt to be removed from my mind about how to run a monster that can use it. Things I would like to know specifically: 1. Can a regular weapon even hit a creature in Gaseous Form? 2. What kinds of weapons CAN hit or damage a creature in Gaseous Form? 3. What kinds of weapons CAN'T hit or damage a creature in Gaseous Form? 4. Does the DR 10/Magic gained from being in a Gaseous Form stack with DR 10/Magic that the creature already has? 5. How hard is it to see a Gaseous Form in good/poor illumination? 6. How hard is it to see a Gaseous Form in complete darkness (i.e. Darkvision)? 7. Does a Gaseous Form provoke Attacks of Opportunity as normal? 8. Can a Gaseous Form be Flanked or dealt Sneak Attack damage? 9. How do touch attacks and ranged touch attacks effect a Gaseous Form? 10. How does fire (sure as from Alchemist's Fire or another source) effect a Gaseous Form? 11. Can you Grapple a Gaseous Form? 12. Can you change from a Gaseous Form to your regular form as a free action, as dismissing a spell is a free action? What if it is a supernatural ability instead of a spell? I'd like to know all of the above, as well as anything and everything that those questions do not answer about Gaseous Forms. Before you ask, yes, I have read, and re-read everything the Player's Handbook has to say about Gaseous Form, everything the Dungeon Master's Guide has to say about Gaseous Form, everything the Monster Manual has to say about Gaseous Form, everything the Rules Compendium has to say about Gaseous Form, and everything that Libris Mortis has to say abotu Gaseous Form. After reading all of that, I am STILL puzzled as to a number of Gaseous Form related things. So please, come to my aid. Thank you in advance. |

The creature does not acquire the incorporeal subtype, so weapons affect it normally, as long as they can bypass the damage reduction granted by the spell. On this subject, damage reduction never stacks unless otherwise stated. So, by default, the creature in your example would not get any better DR. It's no more difficult than usual to spot a creature in gaseous form. This applies to all more of perception, except maybe for tremorsense, since the creature in gaseous form flies. Creatures in gaseous form provoke AoOs as normal, and they can be flanked just like anyone else. Since they become immune to critical hits, however, they also become immune to sneak attack damage. Touch attacks and ranged touch attacks apply as normal to the creature in question. Fire (as well as any other energy) also affects a creature in gaseous form normally. The creature can be grappled normally. If a creature is in gaseous form by virtue of the spell, it can dismiss the spell as a standard action. If it has this ability supernaturally, you defer to whatever actions listed under the ability in question. A vampire, for example, has the ability to assume gaseous form as per the spell, so it would also require a standard action to dismiss it. |

I was at odds, because a fellow DM said that a creature in Gaseous Form is almost impossible to attack, because as you swing your weapon through the gas it just disperses the gas around the weapon. Not contact is made, thus, no damage. I searched and searched for clarification on this issue and found none. Also, even if the DR did stack, Gaseous Form (usually) makes you lose all other supernatural abilities except the ability to resume your other form (if I am not remembering that incorectly) so, it would lose it's other DR anyway, would it not? Thanks very much. |
