I have a player who put one skill point in the cross-class, trained-only skill auto hypnosis. Now, if you only have a half rank in a trained-only skill, can you use it? I lean towards no, because a half rank doesn't help you on a skill check.
I can't find a difinative answer, so thanks for your help in advance.

Trained Only

If this notation is included in the skill name line, you must have at least 1 rank in the skill to use it. If it is omitted, the skill can be used untrained (with a rank of 0). If any special notes apply to trained or untrained use, they are covered in the Untrained section (see below).

So, I guess no.
I thought it did count, oh well.

Each skill point you spend on a class skill gets you 1 rank in that skill. Class skills are the skills found on your character’s class skill list. Each skill point you spend on a cross-class skill gets your character ½ rank in that skill. Cross-class skills are skills not found on your character’s class skill list. (Half ranks do not improve your skill check, but two ½ ranks make 1 rank.) You can’t save skill points to spend later.

And there is a feat that revolves around this concept...

Jack Of All Trades [General]
Prerequisite

You must be at least 6th level.
Benefit

You can use any skill untrained, even those that normally require training.

So it's very possible to do, just remember that most of the DCs for Auto-hypnosis are rather high. The Jack of all trades is later elaborated in another book that it gives you 1/2 rank in all abilities.

A half rank won't help your skill check, but you are technically not untrained anymore. I'd let use at 1/2 of whatever bonus they have, or the full penalty. Either way, it's still better than no use at all. Whether this is for you or not, as RAW, the replies above are correct.

Arteyu has quoted the correct rules text.

Autohypnosis is a (Trained Only) skill. As such, a creature must have at least 1 rank in the skill to use it.

As the OP's creature only has 0.5 rank in Autohypnosis, it cannot use the skill.
