Giant octopus, going from large to huge [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-21-07, 06:33 PM I'm a druid with natural spell, and the ability to cast enlarge person on myself. Sappose I am in large octpus form when I do this. Normally my tenticals reach 20ft, when my size increase from enlarge person would my reach increase to 40ft? If not what if anything will happen with it? Please source your answer, thanks.

05-21-07, 07:10 PM Wild Shape functions just like polymorph, except as noted on p.37 in the PHB. Polymorph changes your creature type to that of the form you are assuming (p.263). Enlarge Person only works on humanoids (p.226), so the spell does nothing. Your size does not increase, and you do not get any increase in reach.

05-21-07, 07:15 PM We use the errata, which states that Wild Shape works like Alternate Form. Alternate Form retains your type, aka humanoid (player in question is an elf). His character would gain the aquatic SUB-type, but he's still a humanoid type and thus, valid for the spell.

To answer the question, there are a couple of useful reference points.

First, the Giant Squid, a Huge monster with tentacles, has a 30 foot reach.

Second, dragons are a creature which has extended reach with one natural attack (their bite), and when their size increases from Gargantuan to Colossal, their Bite reach increases from 20 feet to 30 feet.

With those examples in mind, I'd suggest increasing the tentacles' reach to 30 feet as a reasonable solution.

05-21-07, 07:47 PM If that's the case, then I definitely agree with the 30 foot reach. A huge creature would normally have 15 foot reach (PHB 149). An extended reach ability like the octopus or dragon have should double that to 30 foot.

Sorry about the errata; it's hard for me to provide a source if it isn't even in my book.

05-21-07, 11:19 PM It doesn't work, errata or not, for one simple reason:

Enlarge person explicitly states that multiple magical effects that increase a creature's size do not stack. Wild shape, being a supernatural ability, is magical in nature (see page 315 of the MM). Unless the druid was large to begin with, enlarge person will not increase the druid's size beyond large, despite wild shape.
