Are there rules covering nonmagical grease, with respect to greasing yourself to escape grapples? (obvously, you'd have to lard up ahead of time)

You can treat as a masterwork skill item granting a +2 circumstance bonus on escape artist checks. The cost would be around 50 gp for 10 charges just like a healing kit or a disguise kit.

But no, I don't think there are any official rules on that.

The "official rules" on the subject are covered in DM Adjudication in the DMG.

In other words, decide what seems right, share the info with your players and continue playing.

One would think that in the medival fantasy world of D&D... one could get a tub of lard for a much lesser price than 5gp per use. I mean, it's grease. It gets... might get thrown out the back door of every inn and kitchen each morning. Just walk around offering to clean some kitchens for free for a week and your all set.

I'd just say +2, personally. I mean, yeah it's hard to "Grab" someone greased up, but a lot of grappling moves aren't based upon actually holding someone in place with a hand, it's a lot of restraining stuff, body position, and leverage points that don't require "holding" to immobilize someone. Maybe +4, at most.

You can't go wrong with the standard +2.

You might also consider throwing some creatures with scent in the area just for fun. An adventurer slathered in bacon grease must be the wet dream of many a slavering monster.

Don't forget the Grease spell. A character covered in magical grease gets the bonus on escape artist checks.

There's actual rules for it, or perhaps for lard, I forget, in dungeonscape. I think it confers a +5.
