Greatsword spell caster? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-25-07, 05:12 PM If you wield a two handed weapon, and cast a spell, do you still count as armed? Spell casting counts as a one handed weapon but what does that mean? If you use throwing knives the same way, now what happens?

You have to have a free hand to cast a spell.

Wielding a two handed sword would occupy both hands, thereby preventing spell casting.

Holding that same sword in one hand would free up the other one for casting.

Holding is not wielding.

It'd be a DM call if they allow it as a "free action" to switch between holding/wielding the sword.

Ie.

Begin with 2 hands on sword.

Free action, drop sword with 1 hand.
Standard Action: Cast spell
Free action, grab sword again.

Each DM will be different ... not sure if there was an FAQ similar to this or not ... *shrug*

02-25-07, 06:42 PM As noted you are technically required to have a free hand to cast spells but changing your grip on a two handed weapon is a free action. Unless the spell you're casting takes longer than a standard action you should maintain full use of your two-handed weapon.

I don't see how Throwing Daggers are related. If wielding two weapons it is entirely up the the DM if you could hold both in one hand while casting with the other but I believe the RAW is that you need to drop one weapon. After casting a spell you may (should) however be allowed to quickdraw a weapon with the hand used for casting.

02-26-07, 10:39 AM Basically you have switched from wielding the greatsword to holding the greatsword, but only while you are casting the spell. This means you're giving up any AoO you might make while spellcasting (say from a readied action someone had that will provoke or from an AoO against you that would provoke, such as a disarm or sunder attempt).
