Check the SRD Listen skill (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/listen.htm) description. Behind a door is worth a +5 to the listen check DC. There are other mods like +1 / 10 ft of distance and another mod if the listener is busy doing something else (distracted +5) or sleeping (-10 to listener's check). If they're not actively using the Move Silently skill, use the DCs in the chart instead of the results of the Move Silently check. Should I employ auto-detects if there are characters in heavy armor? Medium armor? Light armor? No armor? Autodetect ? No. Absurdly easy DCs for listen checks ? Yes From the Listen DCs chart (if the characters aren't actively using Move Silently), the DC for no armor walking at a slow pace and being quiet is 10. Medium armor walking at a slow pace and being quiet is 5. Heavy armor is not mentioned, but can be extrapolated as worse, probably DC0. Actual fighting is DC -10. Remember that a 1 on a skill check is not an automatic failure (but you may be using one of the many variant rules that says a 1 become some other negative number). Note also that under "Special" it says When several characters are listening to the same thing, a single 1d20 roll can be used for all the individuals’ Listen checks. |
