On p. 83 of the PHB it says "Every time you have a chance to spot something in a reactive manner (for example, when someone tries to sneak past you while hidden, or you move into a new area), you can make a Spot check without using an action". I'm not sure that this means. In the case of the first example, was the character's first Spot unsuccessful, as they use the words "while hidden" but now he gets a second one, or is this simply the first Spot check? When moving into a new area, does that mean you get a Spot for free for anyone who's hidden, or does this mean moving around someone who's hidden gives you additional Spots??

Thanks for the help.

Whenever the situation changes, there should be additional Spot checks as the DM sees fit.

Rogue is hidden and Fighter walks into the room. Fighter gets an automatic roll to spot the rogue. Probably not gonna succeed. Rogue is safe unless something changes. Fighter lighting a few more candles, or the rogue starting to move, or yes, even the fighter just moving around the room can all possibly mean another Spot check is in order if the DM believes that the DCs have changed or that Fighter now has an easier line of sight to the hidden rogue.

I was under the impression that a better line of sight merely granted bonuses (or more accurately, removed penalties) to your original roll. If it works that way, that just means more incentive for me to not play a stealth character.

Again, as I said, as the DM sees fit. This really falls under the DM interpretation. I'd simply do a new roll. You could just add a bonus to the old one, but then wouldn't there be a circumstance penalty cause he's now sure there isn't something here because if there was, he would have seen it already.

What I'd do is add/subtract modifiers in respect to the rogues original hide check due to what the fighter here is doing while rolling new checks for the fighter occasionally. The rogue has only hidden once. Everytime the fighter does something, it affects how he views/spots.
