| DM Aruthiat07-09-07, 03:58 PM | Well, obviosly the average kobold isnt much of a challenge for a higher level character, but Mr. Sword says he wants to go on a little tour of the local kobold shaft. It seems a bit odd to be rolling 4 attacks every round and trying to figure out how much damage is done when most of the beats could be killed in just half a swoop. Has anyone ever written rules for such a situation? |
| Empiro07-09-07, 04:17 PM | If your minimum damage can down a kolbold then you don't need to roll that. If anything but a 1 hits, then you roll 4 dice all at once and look for 1's. To save even more time, you just say, "you enter the cave and slay about a dozen kolbolds that attack you. After seeing this, the rest of the kolbolds scatter and you explore the mines unimpeded." If there's no xp involved because he's so high level, then why bother even rolling? If you're more mean, you can have him roll to see if he falls into a pit trap, and pick up the action where he sees a bunch of kolbolds arrive and start pouring boiling oil and brown moss down the pit. |
| Some_call_me_Tim07-09-07, 04:42 PM | Has anyone ever written rules for such a situation? Two things come to mind here. Cleave and Great Cleave are core ways to deal with this. Or you could use the Mob template (DMG2) to give the kobolds a fighting chance. |
| Phrennzy07-09-07, 04:52 PM | Give the guy his first mob of 12 to mow down. He'll feel cool and powerful and all. That's his fun. The rest will snipe and when their attacks have no effect, try to lure him into pit traps and lob green mold grenades. None of them want a stand up fight. All of their missile weapons will have poison - perhaps paralytic poison. They will certainly have a killing area - a long hall perforated with murder holes or a natural bridge over a chasm that they can pepper with arrows - or perhaps they had built a wooden bridge that can be raised from the far side. Kobolds are nasty and cunning. |
| mvincent07-09-07, 05:20 PM | Has anyone ever written rules for such a situation? Some common sense rules: 1) If your minimum damage will kill your opponent, there is no need to roll damage. 2) If your minimum attack roll will still hit your opponent, then you can probably dispense with attack rolls as well (unless you still care about 1's). 3) If your opponent has such a low CR that you will not be gaining experience from fighting it, then it probably doesn't stand a chance anyway. The DM is best served by saying that you won, and move on. That said; kobold's are nasty trap-makers. Dump Mr. Sword into a 20' pit filled with whip-cream.* * Sink to the bottom: can't breath, can't swim out, can't throw a rope out. |
| eamon07-09-07, 08:38 PM | A swarm of first level magic missile casting kobolds... ahhh... |

You obviously have never heard of Tucker's Kobolds. Here is a link to the archived thread about this topic. I suggest you read it completely and you will have a new viewpoint on the effectiveness of kobolds. http://boards1.wizards.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-511028 |
