For a first adventure the party is joined by a central force, probably a high mage in a large town. HE assigns them to deliver a crate to a stronghold in a shady area about 180 miles away. They are not allowed to look in the crate.
On their way various obstacles will meet them depending on their choices such as staying on the path and such. When at the stronghold it has just been raided. They discover that someone raided it with the intention of stealing something of value (what the characters took to the stronghold). The man is supposadly going to take over the region by force, pabving the way for a long adventure of tracking the leader of this raid. How does it sound?

How does it sound? It sounds like this should probably be on the "What's a DM to Do?" board rather than the "DM Rules Counseling" board.

Anything counter to the RAW should be discouraged or at the least viewed with paranoid suspicion. Crates aren't RAW:coolcthul

Crates aren't RAWThey are on Table 3-11 in the 3.5 DMG (pg. 65). Also, look here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20070427a).

Sounds to me like you should be prepared to tell the PCs - [WHINEY BRAD PITT VOICE]what's in the box[/WHINEY BRAD PITT VOICE].
