in the character description when it lists the skills that go with each class do these classes automatically come with these skills and they get to pick others or are these the ones they can choose from? can they pick others?

also from what I understand a character can spend multiple slots on one skill thus adding like a +1 modifier?

how do you know how high a character has to role in order to be successful at the skill check? is there a table I am missing or general rule of thumb.

thank you

It sounds like you believe that skills are something that you either have or not, which is true but not in the way that you're saying. Just having a skill on your class list doesn't allow you to use it without training. In addition to their list of class skills, each class gains a number of skill points per level that they can use to buy 'ranks' in skills which interest them. It's these ranks which determine how good your ability is, not whether your class has them. Skills don't come in 'slots' like feats; They're bought up using skill points. This is all covered in great detail within the Player's Handbook, so the best way to get a grip on it may be to forget everything that you think you know about skills and read their chapter from start to finish.

Each class gets a number of skill points each level. They buy “skill ranks” with these points.

If they are buying ranks in a class skill (one of the skill listed in the character description) then they get one rank for each point they spend. If they want to buy ranks for a skill not on their class skill list they get ˝ a rank for each point they spend.

And has far as your rolling, it depends on the task.

An easy task is about 10 or so.

A challenging task is about 15.

A Very difficult task is 20, or even higher.

To hide from someone, you have to beat their spot check, and to see someone hiding, you have to beat their hide check, because some skills are opposed by another skill.
