A 3rd level paladin’s aura of courage makes them immune to fear. Does it, in turn make them immune to the death effect of phantasmal killer (which forces one to make “a fortitude save or die from fear”)?

Also, the 6th level spell Hero’s Feast grants several effects including “immunity to fear effects”. Does this, too, make a character immune to the phantasmal killer death effect?

In both cases, I do not think immunity to fear makes them immune to the 3d6 damage, but that might be up in the air too.

The Phantasmal killer spell has the fear descriptor. As such, it is a fear effect and they are immune in my opinion. I would say the immunity also applies to the 3d6 because that damage appears to be related in some way to the fear effect and fortitude save (as opposed to being related to the mind-affecting, will save portion of the spell).

I'm with orion. phantasmal killer is a fear effect. If something is immune to fear, it's immune to phantasmal killer.

Thanks for the info everyone! I’m satisfied with someone being immune to the death effect if they are immune to fear.

It’s fairly trivial, but I think I’ll keep the 3d6 damage if they fail the will save because while they might not be scared of the illusion, they still believe it was there and hit them. Immunity to mind affects will prevent that damage (and the death save for that matter).

Sure, do as you will in your game, but the damage is also linked to the Fear effect and immunity is immunity.
