Indirect stacking of same bonus types [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-03-08, 12:49 PM Spell, item, feat, or whatever... You receive an enhancement bonus of +4 to Str. Then you receive an enhancement bonus of +4 to your grapple check. Do these stack, to give you a +6 to your grapple check?

Let me know if your answer is contingent on any official rules directly relating to stacking bonuses in this manner (quote source), or if you are just interpreting the existing rules for stacking bonuses.

Suppose the grappling character were a monk wearing a Belt of Giant Str +4 and has had a Greater Magic Weapon cast on him by a friendly cleric with a CL of 16 or greater..

The first provides an enhancement bonus to his Str. The second provides a +4 enhancement bonus to his attack and damage rolls. Are his attack and damage rolls increased by +4 or +6?

Your situation is exactly analagous. The character benefits from both effects.

03-03-08, 01:36 PM I agree, they would work together. You can benefit from a belt of strength and a +1 sword, so you should be able to benefit from a belt of strength and an "amulet of proficient grappling".

I'd probably make the item cost 1/2 of an equivalent amulet of mighty fists.

If you check the description of the Improved grapple feat, for example, you would note that it is an unnamed bonus to your grapple check, not an enchantment bonus.

Do you have a specific example of a spell, item, or feat that gives an enchantment bonus to grapple checks, or are you using that as a hypothetical situation?

The power Grip of Iron grants a +4 enhancement bonus to grapple checks. The spell Bull's Strength grants a +4 enhancement bonus to Str.

I'm also being hypothetical because I need to know if it will stack in other circumstances.

03-03-08, 11:36 PM I see. Officially, I can't say. But I would agree that they would stack.

Same way that a cleric casting Righteous Might before grappling would use his magically improved BAB, STR and size for his grapple check.

03-04-08, 02:48 PM Bulls Strength is affecting the STR of a character -- so that PC would get the enhancement to his STR. Of course it would stack with an enhancement bonus to a grapple check.

Think of it this way. Say you have a longsword with +5 enhancement to it, so it does 1d8+5. Then you get Bulls Strength cast on you, giving you a +4 enhancement to STR. Wouldn't you now do 1d8+7 with the longsword? I see no difference between the enhancement on the longsword and the enhancement on the grapple.
