Reyemile 03-27-07, 06:45 PM	Two characters are having a duel. Naturally, the audience is shouting, giving advice to both sides and telling them how, why, and when to kill each other. The only problem is, one of the duelists has a guy in his corner with a host of White Raven maneuvers. 1) Can a bystander initiate White Raven maneuvers, or must he be involved in the encounter himself? 2) If yes, is there any way to tell that he is using martial maneuvers aside from a Martial Lore role? 3) How should people respond? True, out of character the bystander is using powerful class abilities. In character, though, he may be shouting preternaturally useful advice, but in the end all he is doing is shouting advice. How would the other duelist and his supporters react?

He should be factored into the initiative with either the start of the fight or the first time he chooses to use a maneuver. 2) If yes, is there any way to tell that he is using martial maneuvers aside from a Martial Lore role? Um yeah. Maneuvers aren't like spells or powers where nobody is going to notice them especially White Raven maneuvers which involve a lot of shouting. Martial Lore isn't necessary to recognize that someone is using a maneuver by the way. Martial Lore is necessary to tell what maneuver he's using. 3) How should people respond? There's a huge difference between a "Go get'em!" and a "Feint right, drop down, slash across, spring back...etc." Unless the duelist being advised is one who doesn't mind cheating, I can imagine both duelists sheathing their swords, calmly walking over to the White Raven guy, beating him senseless for interfering in their fight, and then continuing their fight from where they left off.

This isn't a "duel of honor" duel, so much as a "boxing match" duel. If you've ever been to a boxing match, every guy and his brother is shouting "duck left, duck left, DUCK LEFT!" followed by a string of expletives. It's just that, of the dozens of guys shouting advice, one of them is using martial maneuvers to make his advice worthwhile. So my question isn't "can they hear him," but "can they pick him out of the crowd," and not "will they shut him up" but "how will they shut HIM up without shutting up the whole audience."
Geogoose 03-30-07, 03:03 AM	Boxing match arena? noisy? I'd rule the manuevers would not work pending a couple checks. For one I'd say the recipient would need to be aware of the guy using the manuevers to help him to count as an ally and to follow the advice. For two, assuming the first condition was met, I'd rule listen or concentration checks for the target to decide if the manuever satisfied the, "allies who can hear you" clause.
