| Radijs11-22-07, 05:57 PM | My BBEG wizard readied an action to cast a spell the moment someone else would cast a spell in order to disrupt the casting of that spell. The first spell that passed the revue was a Close Wounds spell which is an immediate action to cast and the player who cast the spell told me that it was impossible to force a concentration check on that spell because it was a immediate action. What do the rules say on this? |

What do the rules say on this? The player is in error. A spell is a spell is a spell. If the BBEG readies an action for whenever someone casts a spell, then an immediate action spell meets that criterion. The player may be extending the principle that casting spells with a swift action casting time don't provoke AoOs. They still trigger readied actions. |
| runestar11-22-07, 10:25 PM | I know swift spells can be counterspelled, but can they be disrupted? I mean - say I ready an action to pelt the enemy wizard with an orb of acid the moment he starts casting a spell. But said spell is a swift spell, meaning that he succeeds in casting said spell before I can complete the casting of my own spell. By the time I have finished casting, there is nothing left to disrupt. |

It went like this: Lich readies action to cast a spell against the next enemy who casts a spell. Player casts spell "Close wounds" as an immediate action later in the round. Ready action is triggered and the player is hit with an Orb of Cold for 60 damage. Does the player need to make a DC70 concentration check to succesfully cast close wounds? |

The Concentration skill sets out what types of incidents can disrupt spellcasting and require a concentration check. It makes no exception for spells with a swift or immediate action casting time, and neither does any other text I am aware of. In the absence of such text, the rules on distraction apply in full to those spells. |
