I posted this on the FR boards and no one has touched it for a couple days so I thought I would bring it here. It deals with Mageduels from the FR setting.

During a Mageduel a couple weeks back:

NPC wizo casts a maximized Fireball (60 points of damage, 30 for it being a Mageduel) - the PC did not counter the spell but made the reflex save for half damage. The PC also had Dragonskin cast on himself (Red Dragon), giving him Fire resistance 20.

I ruled damage as such and was wondering if this was right. First I halved the 60 points of damage from the maximized fireball to 30. I then halved that on account of the save (so now its at 15) and finally all damage is absorbed due to the fire resistance 20.

This did not seem right so I changed it to apply the resistance 20 first (from 60 to 40) then halving from the mageduel (taking the damage down to 20) and finally applying the successful saving throw to have the PC take 10 points of damage. I made this change considering all damage taken is halved.

Which of these sounds better to you or I am I doing this completely wrong?

Whomever controls an effect chooses the order in which any bonuses/resistances/penalties are applied. For example, the recepient of the spell chooses when to apply his fire resistance, if particular choice is beneficial to him. In almost all cases, its better to apply elemental resistance last.
