| mvincent05-23-07, 01:09 PM | The "Warning" property (a +1 value) gives a +5 Insight bonus to Initiative "as long as it is held." This obviates putting it on armor spikes, correct?A paladin wearing unholy armor spikes would not avoid the negative level, even though the unholy description (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicWeapons.htm#unholy) says "The negative level remains as long as the weapon is in hand". Regardless: I recommend (as a house rule) avoiding the use of armor spikes period in order to avoid hassles. |
| Phrennzy05-23-07, 01:20 PM | I would allow the enchantment to work as if the PC was weilding the weapon, since, with armor spikes, I believe you are never considered 'unarmed'. I would allow the enchant on the weapon spikes, and charge it per the cost of placing it on a weapon. So he would need to have the spikes enchanted as a +1 weapon and then have the Warning enchantment placed as well. Total cost of 8000gp+ That is, of course, if I played with anything other than core. Which I don't, so the point is moot for me. Also, curse you for making me look up what "Obviates" means. |

| Metafictional05-23-07, 02:26 PM | Reminds me of a player I had who got "Defending" on his Armor spikes with his Greatsword wielder. The way he explained it, taking a -2 to hit with his Greatsword was worth the AC boost (since he wasn't really concerned with actually HITTING anything with his d6 armor spikes anyways). I couldn't really argue with his logic, although I remember going "0_o" when he asked me about Two-Weapon Defense. Still, TWF is a pretty sub-optimal way of doing things, so I didn't mind too much. Plus, he had to actually pay for the Defender Armor Spikes...not much chance of finding a pre-enchanted set of armor spikes in a treasure hoard that aren't already attached to something! |

However, a work-around is to buy +1 defending spikes, then use the "Greater magic weapon" spell to boost the enhancement bonus (especially if you have a cleric in the party with CL boosting items like a bead of karma, orange ioun stone, candle of invocation, and/or deathknell). |
