I feel I should know the answer to this one but I can't find it in any book.

Does a caster have to know the spell for which he is making a wand? For example, can a wizard make a wand of cure light wounds? That would make no sense to me but I can't find the rule that says otherwise. :twitch:

That would make no sense to me but I can't find the rule that says otherwise. :twitch:The crafter has to have the spell prepared (or known if a spontaneous caster) each day he works on the wand. The crafting drains the prepared casting of that spell. From the SRD on creating wands :The creator must have prepared the spell to be stored (or must know the spell, in the case of a sorcerer or bard) and must provide any focuses the spell requires. Fifty of each needed material component are required, one for each charge. If casting the spell would reduce the caster’s XP total, she pays the cost (multiplied by 50) upon beginning the wand in addition to the XP cost for making the wand itself. Likewise, material components are consumed when she begins working, but focuses are not. (A focus used in creating a wand can be reused.) The act of working on the wand triggers the prepared spell, making it unavailable for casting during each day devoted to the wand’s creation. (That is, that spell slot is expended from her currently prepared spells, just as if it had been cast.)Hope that's what you are looking for.

He does not actually need to know said spell, so it is quite possible.
The wiz could provide the use of the craft wand feat, while another spellcaster like a cleric provides the casting of the appropriate spell(cure light wounds in this case). Alternatively, the wiz could attempt to UMD a scroll of cure light wounds to supply the necessarily spellcasting needed to craft said wand, or even duplicate the spell with another spell like limited wish.

:banghead:

Runestar is correct : someone, not necessarily the person with the craft wand feat, has to know/prepare the spell to be stored in the wand.

Thanks guys. I thought that would be the case. But where can I find this information? What book is it in?

It's right there in the DMG, page 215, under Prerequisites.
