Max Skill Ranks [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-19-08, 09:22 PM Simple question. A player wants to play a Pixie (LA +4), and is trying to calculate what his max skill ranks are. I'm telling him HD+3, but he's not 100% sure that's right. So I figured a bunch of posts on here confirming it would do the trick. So just post what the proper way to calculate max skill ranks, and possibbly qoute a source to prove it. Thank you.

03-19-08, 09:29 PM Maximum skill ranks are, indeed, based on class levels/hit dice. So that +4 LA does nothing regarding skill rank maxima; a 1st level pixie rogue (say) is ECL 5, but still only has 4 skill ranks maximum per skill.

03-19-08, 09:31 PM Try telling them that the max skill ranks only go up when you actual gain a HD. LA levels means no Class/racial HD bonuses.

03-19-08, 11:24 PM Maximum ranks for a class skill is HD+3. With the Pixie he should be thankful that it doesn't get racial HD which would receive the x4 bonus for 1st level which is horrible for most races.

03-20-08, 01:53 AM He does get a +4 size bonus to Hide though as well as bonuses to Listen Search and Spot -- that counts for something :P

EDIT: And his stat boosts should make up for a loss of skill ranks too.
