Ok, here's a little thing I've been wondering about.

Does riding-dogs count as being trained for war by default?

Noting that a riding-dog have the exact same cost as a light warhorse (150 gp) and does have a 'combat' entry in the MM. Which warhorses (light and heavy) and warponies have, but the non-war trained horses do not.

But then there is the little niggling bit in the MM under the riding-dog entry.

If trained for war, these animals can...

That if would suggest that they are not counted as being war-trained as a default.

Then the bit from the equipment section about riding-dogs:

This Medium dog is specially trained to carry a Small humanoid rider. It is brave in combat like a warhorse. You take no damage when you fall from a riding dog.

Brave in combat = trained for war?

Any clarification from you rules-gurus?

And if riding-dogs does not come trained for war by default. What would the price of a trained for war riding-dog be vs. one not trained for war?

ok, we have to look at the acutal text in each of the books. Like you previously stated.

See the difference there?

This implies that the dog has special training and is brave in combat. Meaning that a smaller char wishing to use a Riding dog as a mount can do so without having to make the associated ride check to control a mount not normally suited for combat. The entry that seemed to be confusing you in the MM implies that IF you use a riding dog in combat when/if your mount attacks in combat it can also trip much like a wolf, but if you wish to throw a "riding dog" at a group of PC's rather than a normal dog because of the slight adjustment to CR's if the dog had no rider it would not benefit from the triping, because it was not trained for war.

No gold adjustment, (except normal price for riding dog)
No feats required, (aside from normal mounted related issues)

just the good old DM saying..."And let there be a Riding dog mount for halflings and gnomes."

Yup, no DC 20 ride check as per the 'horses in combat' under mounted combat.

I see, so dogs as mounts does come with the trained for war as default. No extra training/cost required for the gnome that wants a war-trained mutt to do trip attacks.

Thank you.
