12-18-07, 03:35 PM So, a couple questions.

1. This came up from one of my newer players who is really into the rules, and I'm not quite sure. So, when multiclassing, do you keep your class skills from your old class, or do you only have the class skills from the level you just took? I've always assumed once a class skill, always a class skill, but now I'm not so sure.

2. With a PrC, what's the deal with XP Penalties? Without involving favored classes, does a PrC count when incorporating XP Penalites to leveling?

12-18-07, 03:55 PM 1) A skill is considered a class skill if it is on ANY of your class's list. This is as far as max ranks goes. When you level up, you must spend you skill points in the way that your newest class level describes. For example: a Fighter 1/Wizard 1 has all of the Fighter's skills and the Wizard's skill as class skills. When he takes a new level of Fighter, he may spend 1 skill point for a rank in Jump, but Knowledge skills will cost him 2 skill points for each rank.

2) PrC's don't cause XP penalties. I don't play with them in the first place. Most people don't.

12-18-07, 05:48 PM When multiclassing a character never loses anything outside of a few specific exceptions. You keep your Saves, HD/hp, attack, skill, and abilities and add the new class to that. As mentioned once you get a class that offers a skill that skill is always a class skill with a maximum rank of (character HD +3) but when leveling you spend "new" skill points according to the class leveled.

PrCs don't count towards multiclass penalties. It was mistakenly left out of the DMG during the transition from 3.0 to 3.5 but has been clarified as true in the errata and faq.

"Whenever a multiclassed character purchases skill ranks, he
spends skill points using the class and cross-class skill lists of a
character of the class level he has just gained."

prestige classes in the new Dungeon Master’s Guide no
longer mentions that you don’t suffer an experience penalty
for having levels in a prestige class. Is this a change or an
error?
It’s an error. Having levels in a prestige class won’t give
you an experience penalty."
