Ok my players have been annoying the Heck out of me about this question.

If he has Mystical Theurge and he takes a class that gives "+1 to level of spellcasting class", can he apply that level to MT. I say no, cause MT doesn't actually cast things, but prestige classes like Assassin would be fine. What's your opinion.

Also what do you think about Uncanny trickster. It gives "+1 to existing class features". I don't see why a Player couldn't put this towards MT or and other Prestige class.

Opinions welcome, Actual Rules would be Greatly appreciated.

Well I don't know about the second thing, but as for the first...

In general, including for the MT, it says something along the lines of "You gain new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) in a divine spell casting class...etc..."

As you said, MT does not actually cast spells, so you can not gain spells/day for it.

As for the 2nd: I wouldn't consider spellcasting progression a "class feature" for these purposes. What does qualify are the things that are typically placed in the "specials" column of the class table (like a Barbarian's rage).

If you want to see the results of allowing the spellcasting progression, check out the Character Opt (or Theory Opt) boards here.

The problem is the Uncanny Trickster specifically says that spellcasting ability is included in class features. So to me it still looks like a valid choice.

Any other opinions or advice?

The ability of some PrCs to advance spellcasting does not constitute spellcasting itself, but is still a class feature (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/glossary&term=Glossary_dnd_classfeature&alpha=):Any special characteristic derived from a character class.@ GuardianLurker: Just because it's not in the "Special" column, doesn't mean it's not a class feature. Instead, all classes explicitly list their class features. And the mystic theurge has one called Spells Per Day which advances casting from two spellcasting classes.

Give him all the spell-casting independantly granted by the MT.

All the classes that have something along the Lines of +1 to (arcane/divine) spellcasting class. Advance the spellcasting of a class that has an actual spellcasting advancement. Those are among others Bard, Cleric, Druid, Ranger, Paladin, Wizard, Sorceror

Thus a Bard/Ranger/MysticThreurge would have a progression in the spellcasting MT levels different from a Cleric/Wizard/MysticTheurge. If you have a DivineCasterX/ArcaneCasterY/MysticThreurge/SomeOtherClass
The SomeOtherClass can still only advance the DivineCasterX and/or ArcaneCasterY spellcasting, as the MT has not spellcasting of itself.

In general you need a classwith spellcasting advancement, something like
Level1 1 0
Level2 2 1 0
Level3 3 2 1
Level4 3 3 2 1 0
The usual things spellcasting base classes like those listed above have.

No spellcasting on the first.
Spellcasting on the second (arcane trickster).
