Mummy = 1 attack per round, Skeletons = 2. Huh? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I asked the monster board guys about this:

I am confused as to why a mummy gets only one attack as a full attack action, when skeletons get two claws.

Why the disparity?

The very helpful Vharuck showed me this:

The number of attacks a creature can make with its natural weapons depends on the type of the attack—generally, a creature can make one bite attack, one attack per claw or tentacle, one gore attack, one sting attack, or one slam attack (although Large creatures with arms or arm-like limbs can make a slam attack with each arm). Refer to the individual monster descriptions.

So according to those rules, the mummy is fine - it's the skeleton that is incorrect.

I get that creatures don't get iterative attacks with natural weapons, and understand why the mummy gets only the single attack. But why are skeletons bucking the system?

Anyone over here have an idea?

Skeletons get 1 attack per claw. Thus 2 claws. Mummies use slams so 1 attack. Your quote says so:

A Large Mummy can make 2, but not meduim ones.

Yah I totally missed the 'per' in that 'per claw'. Oops.

Classic Mummy film noir knowledge would help here - mummies only get one attack because they always have one arm still wrapped against their body.

There's alot of drag and wind resistance with flapping bandages.

Classic film noir mummies are also notoriously slow. All those tightly wrapped bandages hinder its movement.

@Pender. Quit spewing forth lies! It is bad enough that your dragon leaves tiny poops wherever the two of you go, but the lies have got to stop. All classic mummies were merely doing their Redd Fox imitation ("It's the big one!").

Make the mummy large and he will get 2 slams (assuming 2 arms)

They're not really bucking the system coz mummies other nasties to justify its limited number of attacks.

its like the difference between 2 attacks at (1d4+1) each versus 1 attack (1d6+10) but you can get paralyzed when you see the guy and you will get a badass disease that needs magical healing to remove.

i'd take those 2 attacks any day :D
