So a question came up in our last game about if a creature that has a full attack that is: 2 CLAW, BITE as an example can make an attack of opportunity with 2 CLAW attacks or is it 1 CLAW attack.

The DM thought the creature would get 2 CLAW attacks. The attack of opportunity is normally just whatever is listed under the 'Attack' row of the description correct?

Appreciate any help with that one.

The creature only gets the AoO with one of its natural attacks, not all. I believe it gets its pick (just as someone wielding two weapons could take the shot with either).

Unless it's some kind of hydra.... but that's throwing a multi-headed monkey wrench into the mix.

But yes, the rules in question is whatever is under "Attack:XXXXX" is what the monster is supposed to use for it's AoO

See MM pg 312.

You can make an AoO with any one (manufactured or) natural weapon that threatens the target, but if you use a secondary natural weapon you suffer the normal secondary natural weapon penalties (-5 to hit, 1/2 Str bonus to damage).

One weapon only. Wielder's choice.

Whatever is listed under "Attack: ____" is the creature's primary natural weapon. Whatever other weapons are listed under full attack are secondary weapons.

Unless it's some kind of hydra...Even that is subject to more debate than one can imagine.

Hence the ... but that's throwing a multi-headed monkey wrench into the mix. and then saying nothing more.

Hence the ... and then saying nothing more. But that didn't necessarily imply that the interpretation was subject to debate* (i.e. it could still be a monkey wrench without being subject to debate), so a clarification was appropriate.

Apparently, the rules compendium has clarified that a hydra does make an AoO with all its heads. So I guess that finally puts an end to one of the most hotly debated topics here.:)

Lol. That's a baby thread. There's one around somewhere from back in April? that went for like 5 or 6 pages.

Either way, it's nice to know that WotC solved at least one problem with the RC. I hadn't known that myself so thanks for that info runestar.
