| Androcus Divinicus07-08-07, 09:51 AM | I've two questions, one which I'm fairly sure is not addressed specifically by the rules, and the other which may be, but I've not yet found. 1) Can an Archmage who also has caster levels in a class that gives him divine spell slots sacrifice some of those slots in the course of gaining one of his High Arcana abilities? Related: could he use the Spell-Like Ability High Arcana to make a divine spell a spell-like ability? 2) Can an Archmage who has the Arcane Reach ability and the relevant item creation feat then create a staff, rod, or wand that utilizes that ability? For example, say a wand of invisibility that works at a distance? The DMG never specifies that the Archmage must use arcane spell-slots to power his High Arcana ... and it never says that the special abilities the High Arcana grants can only apply to arcane spells. Granted, the structure and flavor of the class seem to strongly imply that it is purely an arcane class, but as the relevant text only ever says, "spells" and "spell-slots", is it not a reasonable reading to assume that divine spells and slots are fair game? Personally, I tend slightly towards the feeling that the Archmage is an arcane class, and that any special abilities associated with that class should be fueled by, and affect only the character's arcane spells. I tend slightly more strongly towards the view that Arcane Reach can affect the spells that an Archmage puts into a spell-trigger item. But, as I think both questions are at least somewhat open to interpretation, I'd like to solicit the opinions of my fellow DMs. Regards, Justin. |

I mean you'd have to go arc/divine and then mystic theurge and then you could finally sub your divine casting lvls for archmage abilities. Couldn't even get close to using the 7th lvl sub powers til almost epic. Given the other extremely powerful options available to arcane casters, this seems a bit underpowered. I don't see any reason to stop a player from doing this, other than for flavor reasons... |
| Androcus Divinicus07-08-07, 10:14 AM | Well. This is an epic character. My campaign ending BBEG, in fact. But my general rule is that I don't let myself get away with anything when desigining monsters and/or NPCs that I wouldn't let my PCs do. So I wanted to run it by a group of DMs as a "Would you let a player do this?" kind of scenario. |

The market price of the item is treated as if the spell were 2 levels higher (and the minimum caster level increased accordingly). This goes for any Archmage power that mimics a metamagic feat (eg Mastery of Shaping, which works pretty similarly to Sculpt Spell.) |

Yes. The rules do not appear to restrict that. Related: could he use the Spell-Like Ability High Arcana to make a divine spell a spell-like ability? No. The rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/archmage.htm) say: "Spell-Like Ability An archmage who selects this type of high arcana can use one of her arcane spell slots" 2) Can an Archmage who has the Arcane Reach ability and the relevant item creation feat then create a staff, rod, or wand that utilizes that ability? No. The rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/archmage.htm) say: "Spell-Like Ability An archmage who selects this type of high arcana can use one of her arcane spell slots" Ah. Indeed they do. And that's what it says in the DMG too. ... wonder how I missed that. Thanks. 2) Can an Archmage who has the Arcane Reach ability and the relevant item creation feat then create a staff, rod, or wand that utilizes that ability? | Someone07-10-07, 01:31 AM | You cannot apply class abilities to an item you create, at least without affecting the cost of the item. A "wand of reaching invisibility" is a different item than a wand of invisibility, and you can't simply apply the archmage's arcane reach ability- you have to incorporate it into the wand of reaching invisibility's creation requirements. And "must be an archmage with the arcane reach ability" is a bid of a stretch in my mind. As Merestil suggested, it would be better to make the wand with the Reach metamagic, adjusting the spell lvl and caster level (and thus price) accordingly. |
| mvincent07-10-07, 02:43 AM | I take it then that this is your opinion rather than a reference to a rule somewhere that I missed?Basically, the rules do not allow for such. This would be similar to meta-magic wands (for which the price, XP costs and manufacturing times are higher) but by RAW even those require actual feats. Merestil Haye's suggestion seems like a suitable house-rule though, if desired. |
