| Free198307-29-07, 04:41 AM | I've got myself an arcane hierophant from races of the wild. This class has a special ability named Companion Familiar. Basically it says that your animal companion inherits the special abilities of your familiar. So my drd 5/wiz 5/ahi 6 has a companion familiar with intelligence 11. Now I'm asking myself: How many tricks could it learn. I guess that I could easily justify learning it all the tricks in the book. I'm counting three tricks per "1" intelligence: 1 Int = 3 tricks; 2 Int = 6 tricks; So, 11 Int = 33 Tricks (+ bonus tricks from druid levels) How much extra skill points will this creature get. I'm not even sure how much it gets from the basic creature (I'm using a tiger). Should I take the bonus HD in account too? Anyway, if my count of tricks is correct, then what the hell is this Arcane Hierophant going to learn his tiger. Any suggestions for other tricks, not mentioned in the DMG? Thanks for the help, Cheers |

Tricks are for getting animals or other creatures with 2 INT or less to perform tasks they otherwise wouldn't think to do themselves. Your familiar is now a magical beast, and 11 is slightly smarter than the average person, so he understands plenty and no longer needs you to tell him how to fetch things (he may resent it now :P). Anyway, at 5th level a Wizard can speak with his familiar, so you can just tell him what to do and how to do it if he doesn't understand... If for old times' sake you want to use tricks to communicate with him, then I would assume that with an 11 INT, and 2 bonus tricks for being an animal companion of a 5th level druid, that he would have access to... 35 tricks. You can teach it calculus by rote probably. If a creature with 1 INT can know 3, and 2 INT can know 6... |

Should I take the bonus HD in account too?" Animals get 2 + int mod in skill points (minimum 1, which is what it was probably getting before the higher Int). They get skill points for all their bonus HD. Skill points are not retroactive. So, for all future HD increases, it would get 2 per (unless Magical beast gives more, I forget). For any past (before the raised Int) HD, it would still only have the 1 per. |
