| Kirano04-08-07, 01:13 PM | Is the Paladin's supernatural ability Detect Evil cast at a caster level of Paladin level or Cleric level (Paladin level -3) ? Which would in fact only change the time limit. |
| Merestil Haye04-08-07, 01:35 PM | If it does not say otherwise, caster level = class level in the class that grant the ability. Thus the CL is the Paladin class level. |
| Slimgauge04-09-07, 12:55 PM | From the online SRD Through 3rd level, a paladin has no caster level. At 4th level and higher, her caster level is one-half her paladin level. |
| Witch04-09-07, 12:57 PM | From the online SRD How is that relevant? That's about spells, not about Detect Evil. |
| tos_shai_hulud04-09-07, 01:07 PM | From the online SRD Through 3rd level, a paladin has no caster level. At 4th level and higher, her caster level is one-half her paladin level. From the online SRD: For creatures with spell-like abilities, a designated caster level defines how difficult it is to dispel their spell-like effects and to define any level-dependent variables (such as range and duration) the abilities might have. The creature’s caster level never affects which spell-like abilities the creature has; sometimes the given caster level is lower than the level a spellcasting character would need to cast the spell of the same name. If no caster level is specified, the caster level is equal to the creature’s Hit Dice. |
| wrecan04-09-07, 01:27 PM | Why do you even need to know the catser level? Detect evil requires no save and since paladins use the ability at will, the durationis irrelevant. At any rate, I agree with tos_shai_hulud. For purposes of the spell-like ability, the caster level is the paladin's character level (including racial HD if the paladin is of a race with level adjustment). |
| Evil DM Mk304-09-07, 01:34 PM | I have allways ruled CL=paladin level, and duration does matter, it is standard action to use it after all! |
| Merestil Haye04-09-07, 04:20 PM | CL would also come into play in the case that an evil character in the area of effect had a Nondetection spell running; the paladin needs to make a caster level check. |
| wrecan04-09-07, 04:33 PM | Good point! |
| Kirano04-12-07, 01:05 PM | So, my Aasimar Paladin lv.5 has a CL of 5 for the purpose of his ability to Detect Evil, since Aasimar have no racial HD. Right? |
| Merestil Haye04-12-07, 01:15 PM | So, my Aasimar Paladin lv.5 has a CL of 5 for the purpose of his ability to Detect Evil, since Aasimar have no racial HD. Right?Yes, it's CL 5; however note that it is only the Paladin class level that matters, and not the characters total character level. Racial HD are not counted. This is because it is a class feature of the Paladin, and not a feature of the creature's race. Therefore a different caster level than "creature's HD" is in fact specified. ETA : From the FAQ in support of this.In addition, most level-based variables for a class feature depend on your class level, as does any level-based variable for a spell you cast as a member of that class. Powers from clerical domains are class features, and any level-based variables they have depend on your level in the class that gives you access to the domain.Detect Evil at will is a Paladin class feature, and therefore the CL of that SLA depends on the Paladin level and nothing else. |
| Kirano04-12-07, 01:24 PM | All right, thank you everyone! |
