I'm not sure how to apply secondary poison damage.

When someone is poisoned they get another check a minute later to avoid more damage. Do they have to make a save every minute after that until they make a save or does the secondary effects only occur once?

Does it work like this:
1) dude gets poisoned - must make a save a minute later and regardless of that save the poison has done it's work,

or

2) dude gets poisoned - has to make a save a minute later, failing that they have to make another save another minute later, failing that....etc untill they make a save or die. This would make poisons much more interesting.

After the second check, the poison's done; that dose doesn't do any more damage.

Thanks Salla.

I think this waters down poison. It would be very rare for someone to get poisoned and die from it. I might try my repeat every minute approach and see how it goes in practice...

There are some poisons that have longer effects than two rounds. Can't recall exactly where I read this right now (might have been in a Dragon Magazine or the Eberron CS or somewhere else).

I know this doesn't have a ton of value without the source but I guess I posted to only reiterate your approach. Some poisons are more than powerful enough (the CON dmging ones) but some of the poisons that work like being sedated or drugged would only be really cool if they lasted many more rounds than two.

What? There are poisons that deliver 2d6 constitution damage! If you fail both saves, you'll recive 4d6 constituion damage... average 14 points... usually enought to kill a lot of characters

Well, it depends who uses the poison and how.

On the contrary, I find that an assassin throwing purple worm poison (1d6 str/2d6 str, DC 24, 700gp) a few times at the arcane caster, running away, repating minute later at the rogue, running away... Can neutralize unprepared party well. Especially if he does that during the night...

EDIT: But well, yeah. They won't do much to a fighter or barbarian normally but hey, they are the guys who are supposed to succeed on those fortitude saves.
