I have a problem. In my campaign I have already sold my party from various shops potions of restoration. I was under the impression that I had pulled this from the DMG and was even using the apropriate price listed. Now I look there again to find no such potion exist?

So I am sitting here in the middle of the session thinking I am losing my sanity because a potion I was sure was in here seemed to have disapeared. What's more I tried finding the cost of such a potion based off the rules for crafting a magic item, and the price was way off what I had. Which makes me wonder where I got that price.

Does a potion of restoration exist? If so, where is it located and how much does it cost? If such a potion does not exist (or if it does exist but I was selling it for far cheaper then I should have been), then what can I do to balance the issue now that the party has purcased and used a number of them?

Help me out here.

Potions are usually of spells of 3rd level or lower, but there's a PrC that allows a person to brew potions of up to 9th level, eventually.

I'd imagine that these uber-brewers are pretty rare as PCs, but it could be assumed that in a major city there could be one or two, pumping out the higher-order healing stuff at a profit. I think they use normal potion pricing, but I could be wrong on that.

Now I look there again to find no such potion exist?Since neither 3.0 nor 3.5 have ever allowed potions of 4th level or higher spells, I would guess you're confusing it with something.

But watch out ofor expensive material components or xp costs, which don't get doubled.

There were also infusions, an item type introduced in 3.0, which allowed use-activated single-charge items to store divine spells of any level, in Masters of the Wild.

I don't know how you estimated yours.

Help me out here.As AoK said, there are prestige classes that can create them, so yes they exist. I can't remember the PrC.

The cost is 50 * spell level * caster level There are no costly magical or xp components - you don't even need a holy symbol to cast the original spell.

One thing to think about is that potions always take a standard action to use, even if the spell in them takes longer. Thus by allowing this you allow characters to recover from negative levels and any amount of ability damage that doesn't actually incapacitate them in the middle of combat, something that is normally impossible.

Rebalancing? Once the supply is gone, it is gone. All the potions the PCs purchased can be traced to a band of adventurers selling a cache that they found in a treasure hoard of a dragon who acquired them when he killed the last person who knew the secret recipe for brewing these potions. All copies of this recipe are incomplete in some way and fail to produce the potion.

And you have an adventure hook too, if you want to allow the potions to be made again.

I had a similar problem when I noticed the rule about no potions with a "personal" range. The brewer sold out, and could not find one particular plant that he needed to make the potion because the only patch he knew about had died out (probably through overharvesting but that's a different issue). Maybe there are some other patches elsewhere in the world, and maybe there are not. I haven't decided yet.

Are you sure you weren't thinking of potions of lesser restoration? Restoration is a 4th-level spell, making it unusuable for potion-making. Wands of restoration are fair game (and a good investment for the party).

I am pretty sure I have seen restoration as a 3rd lv spell on some class's spell list...

Anyways, if you want to create wands or potions of lesser restoration, be sure to seek out a paladin instead of a cleric, it is 3 times cheaper.:)

There really is a prestige class that allows brewing of up to 9th level potions, so it's not impossible to have one.

Lesser restoration doesn't cure ability drain.

This was a bonified Restoration potion folks. And lots of them.

Now how do I rectify this situation... *ponders*

houserule the creation of these potions at the cost you were selling them at.

Why does it need to exist in print for you guys to use it? and i doubt your players will be offended that they can buy better healing.

I was selling them for 680gp. :(

Way too cheap for a 4th level potion. Granted, they have a 20% discount from where they were buying them, but even then it comes to like 800gp or so whihc is still too cheap.

I think I will just explain the issue to my players and retcon it to say the 'potions' they used were really scrolls, and they had someone with use magic device activate them for them.

My players are pretty understanding.

You could also turn it into a plot hook. When the players drink one, they get the lesser restoration benefits instead of what the shopkeeper sold them. They could go back to the shopkeeper, question him/her and find out that there is small group of bandits/scammers who are selling incorrect items to shops around town.

Just a thought.

True, but they bought the potions from the Church of St. Cuthbert (The last place on earth to try and cheta someone out of something) whome they already get along with quite well (from earlier adventures), and they've already made use of the potions to get rid of negative levels and ability drain.

Retcon seems to be my best option at this point.

Alternatively, instead of potions, simply make them 1-use wondrous items (which are not subject to the 3rd lv spell cap that potions are).:D

True ... they weren't potions, they were 'elixirs'. ;)
