I'm on the prowl for an item, usable by any character, that handles negative levels.

Restoration is typically a level 4 spell, so doesn't fit into a potion. What's more, it's 3 rounds casting time, so the fact that it's Healer 3 doesn't help. Is there a way to lower the CT so a healer can fit it in a potion?

If not, does any class has Death Ward or a similar effect as a level 3 spell? Are there other options? (oooh, look, potion is an anagram of option)

You know, you could always make something and Rule-0 it in there.

Potions take a standard action to use, regardless of the casting time of the spell the potion casts. Thus a potion of Lesser Restoration works in one round, even though the spell takes 3 rounds to cast normally. A theoretical potion of Restoration would also take 1 standard action to use.

Played a campaign once where the DM ruled that potions of a spell higher than level 3 are treated sort of like epic items, in that they cost ten times what the normal math would put them at, both in xp cost and gp cost. Otherwise, they were craftable by anyone with the brew potion feat and the appropriate spell available. That seemed sort of steep to me, but it was awfully nice to be able to have potions of restoration and heal. Maybe you could work something like that out if you want them in your game.

If you're desperate to have Restoration in a bottle, you could always take the Craft Wondrous Item feat and make an elixir instead of a potion. They don't have limits on their spell levels.

Merestil - yes, but that still doesn't adress the fact that you can't put a 3 round casting time into a potion at all. It's one round or less - otherwise it can't be "potionized" according to SRD.

Heros Backpack - Custom items are banned to avoid stuff like continous True Strike item.

Lowering the casting time of Restoration (possible through a feat or class feature?) is one way. Finding a class with Death Ward as a third level spell is another (is there any?). Finally, there might be a spell out there with requisite casting time of no more than level 3 that cures neg levels (is there one?). Psionic power to fit in a psionic tattoo works just as well, of course.

Merestil - yes, but that still doesn't adress the fact that you can't put a 3 round casting time into a potion at all. It's one round or less - otherwise it can't be "potionized" according to SRD.That turns out not to be the case.

Here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/potionsAndOils.htm) is Potion section of the SRD. It lists a number of potions and their associated costs.

The result of 82-84 on a minor treasure roll is a Potion of Lesser Restoration.

Lesser Restoration (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/restorationLesser.htm) has a casting time of three rounds.

Consequently, according to the SRD you can make potions of spells that require more than a standard action to cast, and the potion still takes one standard action to consume.

I looked around for a statement to the effect that "Potions cannot contain a spell which takes longer than one standard action to cast" but did not find it. If you can, then I'll agree that you are correct, with the caveat that the standard hierarchy of rules application (general rules are superseded by more specific rules which are superseded by exceptions) must apply.

Ouch, I misread:
(first paragraph http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/potionsAndOils.htm)
It can duplicate the effect of a spell of up to 3rd level that has a casting time of less than 1 minute.

For some reason I read that as "1 round". OK, great this means the Healer 3 spell Restoration can indeed be put into a potion. This issue has been fully resolved, thanks Merestil.

No problem. :)

I've learned something too. Specifically that there is a class with Restoration as a third level spell, and thus someone who can make potions of it. As a result I can start sneaking them is as treasure.
