Do these spells (and the corresponding magic circles) protect against attacks made by creatures with the appropriate alignment? Or only against attacks and creatures that are inherently of that type?

For example, does a protection from evil spell protect against attacks from a fighter or wizard with an evil alignment (LE, NE or CE), or only against attacks from creatures with the evil subtype, or attacks/spells with the evil subtype?

I've never been entirely sure on this, thanks for any input.

...This second effect works regardless of alignment....

I would assume, because of that one line in the spell description, that is works against ALIGNMENT not just type.

They work against alignment, not type.
