Ok, I have a little question....my players wanted to know this because a lot of them use their bows and such.
Do range attacks do more damage when they're up close or not?

Thank you!:)

Not by default, but several ablilites, such as the feat Point Blank Shot and the rogues sneak attack only work when within a certain range.

The only way distance affects ranged attacks is by giving a -2 penalty per range increment between the shooter and the target.

And for the inevitable "Why can't I shoot him in the head and kill him instantly?!" argument: They can. It's called Coup De Grace, it's described on page 306 of the PHB, and it can be done with a bow or crossbow if the conditions are right. Done correctly, there is very little chance of the target living through it.
