I have in game a Dwarven knight with Dwarven Warpike and Spiked armor. Does this character continuously threaten adjacent squares and reach squares ? Same game has Warforged with Longspear and a natural slam attack. Same question, does he threaten with reach and adjacent ?

I have ruled that the Spikes and Slam threaten , for the moment, but it seems a bit wonky . The knight has specific abilities which benefit from threatening squares and he's trying to utilize them to his best advantage. I don't mind that , but i am not sure it's all legal. I am beginning to feel that using a two handed weapon might be so involved that a character cannot use spikes or slams in a round when they have attacked with a reach weapon , but i havent yet found rules to support this argument.

Can anyone point out a ruling for me? Hey! Thanks!

A warforged always threatens within its reach because of the slam.

Reach weapon and spiked armor/gauntlet is an oft-used tactic actually.

Some people make house rules about how often in a round you can let go of a two-hander to use a free hand though.

Spikes are weak weapons and usually piercing. If you want to mess with them throw some zombies or something with DR against piercing at them.

Can anyone point out a ruling for me? From the 3.5 FAQ (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20030221a):
"Is a character wielding a two-handed reach weapon
(such as a longspear) and wearing spiked armor
threatening all squares within 10 feet? Assuming he has
Combat Reflexes, can he make an attack of opportunity
with his longspear and then with his armor spikes in the
same round?
A character wearing spiked armor threatens all squares
within his normal reach (5 feet away). If he also wields a
longspear, he would also threaten all squares 10 feet away.
Any time a character wielding more than one weapon is
allowed an attack of opportunity, he may use any weapon that
threatens the opponent who has provoked the attack. In this
case, imagine an enemy who charged the character and then
tried to disarm him. The charge attack would provoke an attack
of opportunity from the longspear as the enemy moved out of a
threatened square (in order to move adjacent to the character
and deliver the charge attack). Then, the disarm attempt would
provoke another attack of opportunity (assuming the enemy
didn’t have Improved Disarm). This attack of opportunity could
be made only with the armor spikes, since the longspear
doesn’t threaten an adjacent enemy."

I had trouble visualizing this fighting style at first, because I was imaging spiked armor as just the spikes on the shoulders and torso.

"What is he doing? leaping forward 5' and body checking someone as an Attack of Opportunity"?

But, if you think of the spikes on the toes, knees, and forearms instead of just on the torso, it becomes more believable.

Mvincent, and others who replied, many thanks. Wonky, but legal.

I allow it but the normal TWF rules kick in if this is your plan (or secondary natural attack rule in the case of the warforged example). PC has to take the normal penalties for this tactic to threaten all squares.

Read page 43 of the current D&D FAQ

There are no Two Weapon Fighting penalties for Attacks of Opportunity with Armor Spikes (or any weapon, for that matter). You're only two Two Weapon Fighting when attacking with a Primary Weapon AND an Off Hand Weapon during a single Action - typically a Full Attack or a Pounce.

Simply employing more than one weapon as part of a Full Attack won't impose a penalty cut it unless you are using it as an Off Hand Weapon for extra attacks. For example, with Quick Draw you can use your iterative attacks to throw multiple Daggers. You do not treat the second or third dagger as an Off Hand Weapon and do not suffer a Two Weapon Fighting penalty.

You don't get penalized for having a potential Off Hand Weapon ready but not used for an Off Hand Weapon bonus attack either. Just wearing Shield Spikes or Armor Spikes or having a Double Weapon doesn't count as Two Weapon Fighting - nor is employing them in an Attack of Opportunity after using a different weapon during your own initiative (like a Bow).
