| omnicrondelicious11-21-07, 07:08 PM | Howdy, I searched the archives for this exact answer but out of the 188 posts returned, none were definitive. In my case, I have a player who is being reincarnated from a Shifter (-2 Int, -2 Cha) to an Orc. My understanding is that mental stats (Int, Wis, Cha) are unchanged. Only physical (Str, Dex, Con) modifiers are changed. All the message board posts I found suggest this, though none are definitive. My player has called the D&D hotline and was told that ALL previous racial modifiers are removed and then ONLY the physical modifiers of the new race are applied. Hotline has been wrong before so I want to get second-thru-fiftieth opinions on this. thanks, .o. |

This is what the SRD says about the stats: A reincarnated creature recalls the majority of its former life and form. It retains any class abilities, feats, or skill ranks it formerly possessed. Its class, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, and hit points are unchanged. Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores depend partly on the new body. First eliminate the subject’s racial adjustments (since it is no longer of his previous race) and then apply the adjustments found below to its remaining ability scores. The subject’s level (or Hit Dice) is reduced by 1. If the subject was 1st level, its new Constitution score is reduced by 2. (If this reduction would put its Con at 0 or lower, it can’t be reincarnated). This level/HD loss or Constitution loss cannot be repaired by any means. In my game, I've ruled that the sentence "First eliminate the subject's racial adjustments" is dependent on the previous sentence, "STR, DEX, and CON scores depend partly on the new body." A semicolon between the two sentences probably would have helped clarify things... |
| Wih11-22-07, 01:01 AM | That's great for balance. Start as a Grey Elf (+2 INT), then reincarnate into an Orc. Lose a level, gain some broken stats for a +0 LA character. No, you're suppose to get all the stats of the new race. Ex-Humans lose the bonus feat ans skills points and gain all the new features of their race. |

No, you're suppose to get all the stats of the new race. Ex-Humans lose the bonus feat ans skills points and gain all the new features of their race. First off, reincarnate is random, so you can't exactly choose to die and become whatever you want. Second, the text says apply the adjustments found below...the chart that is below this statement includes only Str, Dex, Con. So by the strictest reading, you would wipe out all the old adjustments and then modify only the str, dex, and con. However, I believe HolyToaster has it right, that only your physical stats are modified. |
