| tstone001-23-08, 06:35 PM | A friend and I recently got into a rules argument over the capabilities of the Runecaster class. It got quite heated, as I felt he had misread the rules, and regardless, I'll just get into it to see what the community thinks before I ask wizards. Alright. The main crux of the argument was that he felt that the Improved Runecasting class feature (pg 52) negated the experience cost for rune creation explained in the Inscribe Rune feat (page 36). My interpretation is that creating runes costs xp equal to 1/25 of the runes base price, INCLUDING the base prices found on the chart on page 52. Meaning that creating a rune, regardless of what options are added onto it from the chart on page 52, will cost the caster 1/25 of the item's base price in experience. His contention is that the base prices found on page 52 do not stipulate an xp cost, neither on the chart nor in the description for Improved Runecasting. I did attempt to point out that the description of Improved Runecasting describes that the chart only includes extra features given by the prestige class, and that these only increase the cost of creating runes, not replacing the mechanics for them entirely. However, perhaps I am overlooking something, or am just not seeing the big picture. Any assistance or clarification would please me greatly, as this has become a major sticking point, despite its relatively minor importance in the grand scheme. |

The phrase of the ability "the extra features increase the cost of the rune" seems pretty self evident. You're still crafting the things but you are making them stronger. Stronger magic items take more money and XP to craft. In the Player's Guide to Faerun there is a revised for 3.5 Runecaster class and Inscribe Rune feat. They changed the price to make a rune with the feat to Spell Level x Caster Level x 50. With that amount, you will then find that the Enhanced Rune chart matches up to be a replacement chart for the feat, including the line for "Once" which is how the feat works without the Runecaster class. The chart is the same, so you can just say that if you are a Runecaster, you use the Enhanced Rune chart in place of the normal creation formula, which I think was the intention. |
