what action is activate inner armor ability of a 10 lv Sacred fist (complete divine)? i think isn't an action or is a standard action, but i don't know what action is needed when isn't said nothing in the description. help me please i asked it in prestige class forum but no one answered me...

He may invoke a +4 sacred bonus to AC, a +4 sacred bonus on all saves, spell resistance of 25 for a number of rounds equal to his wisdom modifier. he may use an inner armor once per day.

It doesn't specify, and it's not covered in the errata, so I'd say this one is up to the DM. I would say it's a non-action; or perhaps a swift action.

If anyone does remember, you could go with the 3.0 version from DotF (was it a standard action back then?) - but as of today, using it as an immediate action would be nice.

The default action type for activating abilities, items and so on is a standard action. Since the ability doesn't specify otherwise, that's the action it requires.

so if i found some ability without time spending effort i have to conclude it is a standard action?^?
do you know some other abilities without action time specified? we can compare them both...

I don't see where it says this under 'standard actions' in the PHB.

In fact, I didn't see anywhere that mentioned a "default action type". It specifically mentions that a standard action is used for attackng, casting spells, activating magic items, or using supernatural/spell-like abilities; but not for activating extraordinary abilities.

Activate magic Item (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm#activateMagicItem) appears on the list of Standard Actions (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm#tableStandardActions ).

In the absence of specific information to the contrary (swift and immediate actions were introduced to the game in the Expanded Psionics Handbook - published before Complete Divine, if memory serves), a standard action would be appropriate.

He's not activating a magic item; he's using a class ability.

edit: It's no different then say, a barbarian's rage. This is also an extraordinary ability that requires activation. In the rage description it says that "Entering a rage takes no time itself, but must be done on the Barbarian's turn", which is a swift action. There's your precedent.

It's actually very different. As you say, the description for rage specifically states it takes no time to use the ability. The description for inner armor has no such specification.

Anyway, from the SRD:
Those extraordinary abilities that are actions are standard actions unless otherwise noted.

Of course, having just made that post I decided to go look for the book-description of extraordinary abilities, which says something quite different. MM page 315 and MM3 page 212 both state that extraordinary abilities are free actions unless noted otherwise.

Which begs the question of why the SRD lists them as being standard actions..

Perhaps they're assuming? I couldn't say. It's rare that an extraordinary ability is activated anyway; they're almost always innate.

It's like a monk's slow fall. You don't need an action to use it, it just works.

Big ups for the 2nd post though.
