Steve, Andrew, Chris, Bevis, Dave - do not read this!

I have some kenku rogue/rangers on a ledge. They have low-light vision, and the ambient illumination is not good (shadowy illumination).

They have some oil of darkness. What are the mods for firing out of darkness into a lit area?

There really shouldn't be any penalties to firing out of a darkened area and into a lit one. If the area they are firing into is shadowy illumination, there is the standard modifier for the concealment that provides, including not being able to sneak attack.

Unless the area they are in provides concealment for someone peering through it (for example, inside the area of a darkness spell) then there is no penalty. It's much easier to see into lit areas from darker areas.

Thanks. Forgot that bit about SA, but the monsters have low-light vision and the party will be carrying torches. So it's all good. :D

Damn, I am going to kill a character tonight - don't care which.

Low-light vision isn't the same as dark vision though. I do not believe low-light vision eliminates the concealment from shadowy illumination the way dark vision does.

Uh...best of luck?

As long as it's from a challange rating appropriate encounter where character action is capable of getting through it without death then there is no reason a DM couldn't hope to kill a character. I myself have routed on killing someone. It's when you set out to kill a character by either throwing something way too powerfull or a no-win scenario or by no save events that things are horribly wrong.

The Rules Compendium provides rules for using the light source of other people. I wish I could quote it directly and use page # reference, but I'm at work ATM.

The basic break down is you can see a distant light source from a certain multiplier of its light radius away (X3 sticks out for some reason).

Example: The party is walking in total darkness, but carrying a torch (20ft light radius) then you can see it from 3x that distance or 60ft. (if the multiplier is 3). If you are within this radius, then you can utilize the lighting to its fullest capacity, meaning with out any special vision, you can see normally for 20ft from the torch, and shadows upto 40ft. Your relative position to the light source has nothing to do with the quality of illumination. (now that I think about it, 60ft seems really short, maybe its 3x40ft, the full range of the torch, or 120ft, or maybe the multiplier is higher x5 or x10)

So the basic break down is, yes your ambush is totally plauseable, and in fact a great tactic supported by the rules.

What counts is whether the observer is in total darkness or an area with dim lighting. If the observer is in total darkness, the light source can be seen at a distance 20 times the radius of light the item gives. If the observer is in dim illumination he can see the light source at half that distance.
