Aright so Balefull says the target may revert to their original form as a standard action if their a shifter subtype.

So does this mean they can now change into said 1 HD animal at will as a standard action or is the spell simply ended when the target reverts back?

The spell entry, at the very end says:

Incorporeal or gaseous creatures are immune to baleful polymorph, and a creature with the shapechanger subtype (such as a lycanthrope or a doppelganger) can revert to its natural form as a standard action (which ends the spell’s effect).

So no, once the shifter reverts out of the Polymorph, the spell has ended.

My copy of the PHB didn't have the tagline...
(Which ends the spells effect in it.)

Good to know.

Baleful Polymorph (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/balefulPolymorph.htm)

...Incorporeal or gaseous creatures are immune to baleful polymorph, and a creature with the shapechanger subtype (such as a lycanthrope or a doppelganger) can revert to its natural form as a standard action (which ends the spell’s effect).

Pretty self explanatory.

I went in and deleted that part from your copy, knowing that you would come here and ask, and then I would look cool.

My plan is all coming together.

Well it is an old ratty copy of te 3.5 phb from when they first came out. I'd replace it but with 4th coming out in a year why bother.

Some erratas have been applied to the actual PHB text itself, but only if you have a sufficiently new PHB of course ;-) - that's why some PHB's differ from others.
