Hello,
Question came up during the game last night.

When can you do range sneak attack?
I know range is 30'. unless a feat makes it different.

You cannot flank with range attack. correct?.
can a thief sneak attack at range when a target is flanked by other allies?

So I said that the target had to be flatfooted or denied is dex bonus.
they seemed to think that that mades a ranged sneak attack a lot less common and useful. hence this post.

Am I missing something?

thanks for your many and insightful replies...

Let's see...

No feat in the core books does.

Correct.
Well, there might be some non-core feats which let you do it, but otherwise no.

A rogue has to be flanking to sneak attack, not be attacking a flanked target.

You are correct. Ranged sneak attacks are more difficult to pull off, but they are useful because rogues are too squishy to remain in direct melee for long.

Am I missing something?

Nope.

My pleasure.

Your best options for Ranged Sneak Attack are generally sniping (see the Hide skill for details) or a repeatable method of becoming Invisible (Greater Invisibility is even better).

While others have answered the bulk of the question, you find find it useful to know that the Whisperknife from Races of the Wild can flank with a thrown weapon, and a both the White Raven tactical feat from Tome of Battle, and a PHBII Alternative Class Feature for the Ranger can make an enemy "flanked" as a condition, so ranged people can benefit from it.

Don't forget that if you gain initiative first the target is considered flatfooted thus will be able to be sneak attacked (provided you are within the range).

You have to understand that sneak attack is an opportunistic ability. It can be powerful in the right circumstance but not in every situation. That's why rogues get sneaky skills to hide and sneak up on targets. If that's not cup of tea then play a scout. ;)

I hate people for beating me to the ranger part. DAMN YOU WIH!!!

But yeah, the methods people have said are most of the ways I can think of. A bow that creates paralysis or blinding though would help. Both ways render a person unable to add their dex bonus to AC if i remember correctly.
