Snowy mountain challenges. [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-21-07, 01:30 AM This is properly the wrong forum for this, but i couldn't find a better one.

I'm sending my players through a mountain pass in the middle of the winter with a snowstorm approaching, and i wanted them challenged by environment more than a couple of Fortitude checks, but i'm having trouble coming up with good challenges:confused: . I'm thinking about an avalanche already, but that won't be enough (legends claim that the pass has never been crossed during the winter months before in history, so i'm wanting them to feel they've earned it if they make it through)

09-21-07, 03:18 AM Sheets of ice that require balance checks to cross, crevices to fall in, snowstroms to blind and to get lost in. Check frostburn for rules.

Some sort of supernatural weather like Death Hail from Frostburn (causes Str and Con damage after 10 minutes of exposure and every 10 minutes thereafter). This could also lead to the next idea.

Have the pass be haunted by the undead remains of people who have tried to cross it in the past. Entombed from Frostburn would make great sense. CR 10 though. Ice gaunts are also great, CR 6 only.
Frost giants could be demanding a toll to pass through.

09-21-07, 12:08 PM You've got cold dangers, altitude sickness, difficult terrain.

I like the idea of undead, as they would be unaffected by the cold and altitude. Maybe the remains of some ill-fated Donner party, still craving flesh after all these years. Make them fight as they are crossing a frozen lake. They would need to make balance checks. Fire could be both friend and enemy. What happens when the mage's fireball destroys the ice? :plotting:

09-21-07, 07:45 PM The simple core solution would be Mohrgs. Maybe throw in a mob of zombies.
Ghosts would give you more flexibility to match the situation. Do you have any books other than the core?

I'm almost thinking of creating a custom cannibalistic cadaver of some sort.:plotting:
